Sermon Highlights
This weekend we celebrated our Nations independence. We celebrated with parades, cookouts and fireworks. We have so much to be thankful for. We have many freedoms for sure! Our Scripture text for this message came from Romans 13:1-7. We looked at ways that we can celebrate and maintain our freedoms that we have. One way was to “Obey our governing authority.” The Apostle Paul is making sure that we understand this in his writings. He says in verse 1, “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” Paul said twice in this verse that “God has established.” If we don’t obey, there is a price to pay. Verse two talks about those who disobey; “…those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”

Another way to celebrate and maintain our freedom is “By doing what is right.” Freedom means having the ability to do what is right. When we do what is right, we don’t have anything to worry about. But it’s only when we do wrong that we need to worry. If a policeman is following you and you’re going the speed limit you have nothing to fear, but if you are going over the speed limit and a police officer is behind you, your heart starts to beat a whole lot faster. Why? Because you broke the law.

A third way to celebrate and maintain our freedom is by “Worshiping God.” The Lord wants us to be free in Him. He wants to take our chains of sin away from us so that we are not in bondage. God does not want us to perish and gives us a way out (John 3:16). God loves us so much that he did not create us to be robots nor puppets on a string. He gives us free will. We are free to be free in Him. It’s our choice! We can say like Joshua said, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” We celebrate our freedoms here in our Nation, but that’s only a temporary freedom. Real freedom is accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and that’s eternal.
